Description

Here’s a general guide on how to make activated EM:

Materials needed:

Ingredients need:

  • 1 part EM-1
  • 1 part molasses (as a food source for the EM micro-organisms)
  • 20 parts water
  • optional: EM Ceramic pipes
  • optional: EM Ceramic powder

Equipment needed:

  • 1 large container (plastic or glass)
  • 1 stirring utensil (wooden or plastic)
  • Air-tight lid or cloth cover
  • pH meter or pH strips
  • Measuring cups

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare the container:
    • Ensure that the container is clean and sanitised to avoid contamination.
  2. Mixing the ingredients:
    • Measure 1 part molasses.
    • Measure 1 part EM-1.
    • Measure 20 parts of water. Heat 5 liters of the water.
    • Mix the molasses and the heated water thoroughly to create a molasses solution. If all the molasses is diluted add the rest of the water.
  3. Combine ingredients:
    • Add the EM-1 to the molasses solution.
    • Stir the mixture well to ensure an even distribution.
  4. Check pH (if necessary):
    • Check the pH of the mixture using a pH meter or pH strips.
    • The optimal pH for activated EM is typically around 3.5 to 4.0.
  5. Aeration:
    • Cover the container with an air-tight lid which can contain a burper to allow gasses to escape but preventing contamination.
    • Place the container in a warm, dark place for fermentation. The ideal temperature is around 32 degrees Celcius (90 degrees Fahrenheit).
  6. Fermentation:
    • Allow the mixture to ferment for 7-14 days. During this period, the EM micro-organisms will multiply and create an activated EM solution.
  7. Check for readiness:
    • After the fermentation period, check for a sweet-sour smell, which indicates the activation of microorganisms.
    • The solution should be clear and have a pleasant fermented odor.
    • A white film on the surface can be seen, this is the yeast
  8. Straining (optional):
    • If desired, strain the solution to remove any remaining solid particles.
  9. Storage:
    • Transfer the activated EM to a clean, airtight container for storage.
    • Store it in a cool, dark place.
